The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, has opened a portable breast self-examination booth to promote breast health awareness and encourage women to identify possible signs of breast cancer at an early stage.
The booth was inaugurated by AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas at the Department of Medical Oncology as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The institute described the facility as the first of its kind in India.
The booth provides women with a private space to learn the correct method of breast self-examination through simple instructions displayed inside. The initiative aims to reduce hesitation, improve awareness and encourage women to seek medical advice if they notice unusual changes.
Dr Biswas emphasised the importance of early detection and timely medical consultation in improving breast cancer outcomes. Women are encouraged to remain aware of changes in their breasts and consult qualified healthcare professionals if they identify anything unusual.
Dr Sourav Kumar Mishra, associate professor in the Department of Medical Oncology, said the department had treated around 1,000 breast cancer patients since its establishment four years ago. Approximately 100 patients visit the department every month, he added.
The department also highlighted concerns about patients reaching hospitals at advanced stages of the disease and the need to strengthen awareness and early diagnosis.
Alongside medical care, the programme drew attention to the emotional and psychological challenges faced by patients. Activities involving music and discussions about patient experiences formed part of the awareness initiative.
The department is also planning to establish a permanent breast self-examination booth in the near future.
The initiative highlights the role of accessible health education in encouraging preventive action. While self-examination can help women become familiar with their bodies, it does not replace professional assessment or recommended breast cancer screening. Timely medical consultation remains important when symptoms or unusual changes appear.
