National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2026 was observed in New Delhi on Thursday with a renewed call for regular, voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation to maintain a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood components across the country.
The national observance was organised by the Blood Transfusion Services Division of the Directorate General of Health Services in collaboration with Lady Hardinge Medical College and its associated hospitals.
The theme for this year’s observance is “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.” The campaign seeks to encourage eligible citizens, particularly young people, to become regular voluntary blood donors.
Blood and blood components are required for a wide range of medical needs, including surgery, trauma care, treatment of severe anaemia, cancer and blood disorders, maternal healthcare and other emergency and life-saving procedures.
Unlike many other medical products, blood cannot be manufactured and therefore depends on donations from eligible individuals. Regular voluntary donation is consequently an important part of maintaining availability at blood centres and hospitals.
During the national programme, State Blood Transfusion Councils, non-governmental organisations and other organisations involved in promoting voluntary blood donation were also recognised for their contributions.
The government is using the e-RaktKosh platform for donor registration and monitoring of blood collection activities. A voluntary blood donation pledge is also being promoted through digital platforms to encourage wider participation.
The nationwide mega voluntary blood donation campaign will continue until October 2. States, Union Territories, blood centres and participating organisations are undertaking donation drives and awareness activities during the campaign.
Health authorities have urged eligible citizens, healthcare institutions, educational institutions and voluntary organisations to continue supporting voluntary blood donation throughout the year rather than limiting participation to awareness days.
