Artificial intelligence is increasingly finding applications in India’s healthcare sector, with medical technology companies using AI to support diagnosis, monitoring and clinical decision-making.
The technology is being adopted in areas such as diagnostic imaging, ECG analysis, pathology and remote patient monitoring. Healthcare specialists say these applications could be particularly useful in a country where access to specialist doctors remains uneven between major cities and smaller towns.
AI-based systems can analyse large amounts of medical data and flag cases that may require closer attention. In diagnostic imaging, for example, AI can assist doctors by identifying abnormalities in scans and helping prioritise cases for review.
The technology is also being incorporated into connected medical devices. Instead of simply recording a patient’s vital signs, newer systems are being designed to combine different types of clinical information and provide doctors with a broader picture of a patient’s condition.
For India, one of the potential benefits is extending specialist support to hospitals and healthcare centres that may not have access to specialists at all times. AI-assisted tools could help doctors in smaller centres identify high-risk cases and determine when patients may need referral to larger hospitals.
However, wider adoption also faces challenges. Healthcare data remains fragmented in many settings, while interoperability between different systems can be difficult. There is also a need for trained professionals who can use and interpret AI-supported technologies appropriately.
Regulatory oversight and clinical validation will remain important as more AI-enabled medical devices enter the market.
Experts say the most useful applications will be those that demonstrate measurable improvements in diagnosis, reporting time, monitoring and access to specialist expertise.
The growing adoption of AI in Indian medtech therefore points towards a model in which technology supports doctors and expands healthcare access rather than replacing clinical judgment.
