National Cancer Awareness Day: J P Nadda Urges Early Screening for Oral, Breast and Cervical Cancers

NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Saturday called on people to prioritise cancer screening and early detection, marking National Cancer Awareness Day in India.

The minister urged people to remain aware of cancer prevention, recognise early warning signs and seek timely medical advice. He specifically highlighted the importance of screening for oral, breast and cervical cancers, which are among the major cancer types addressed through public health programmes.

Nadda also encouraged people to adopt healthier habits, including avoiding tobacco and alcohol, exercising regularly and maintaining a balanced diet. He advised individuals experiencing unusual or persistent symptoms to consult a doctor rather than delay medical evaluation.

The minister asked people to visit their nearest Ayushman Arogya Mandir or other healthcare facility to obtain information about recommended screening services.

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed annually on November 7 to increase public understanding of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The observance aims to encourage people to take an active role in their health and to reduce delays in seeking medical care.

India has expanded cancer screening through the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Government figures indicate that 86.97 crore screenings have been conducted for oral, breast and cervical cancers under the programme.

However, public health experts continue to point to challenges in ensuring that people who receive abnormal screening results complete further investigations and begin treatment without unnecessary delays.

Screening can help identify certain cancers or precancerous changes before symptoms become apparent. The recommended approach depends on factors such as age, risk profile and medical history.

Healthcare professionals say awareness campaigns must be supported by accessible diagnostic services, timely referrals and affordable treatment.

The National Cancer Awareness Day message highlights the importance of prevention, early detection and strengthening access to cancer care across the country.
