India is expanding its digital healthcare infrastructure with a renewed focus on electronic health records, digital health identities and the responsible use of technology in healthcare.
The developments were highlighted at Arogya Manthan 2026 in New Delhi, which marks eight years of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and five years of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
The programme has brought together government officials, healthcare providers, insurers, technology experts, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss the next phase of India’s health assurance and digital health systems.
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has created a national digital framework through platforms such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account, Healthcare Professionals Registry and Health Facility Registry. These systems are intended to make health information more accessible and improve continuity of care.
According to government figures, more than 97.8 crore ABHAs had been created by September 1, while more than 121 crore health records had been linked to the digital ecosystem.
New initiatives discussed at Arogya Manthan include the National Healthcare Providers Registry mobile application, an implementation guide for the National Health Claims Exchange and a Secure Data Environment for health data.
The Secure Data Environment is intended to allow approved users to work with de-identified health data within a controlled system. The platform could support health research, programme planning, outcome analysis and responsible artificial intelligence applications.
The government is also focusing on interoperability between different parts of the healthcare system so that digital information can be used more effectively while maintaining safeguards for personal data.
The initiatives reflect India’s broader effort to combine health assurance with digital infrastructure and technology-driven healthcare delivery.
