LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has begun the process to allow eligible government doctors to continue working through reappointment until the age of 70, a move aimed at addressing shortages of medical professionals in the state healthcare system.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said the government is working on a mechanism under which doctors reaching the existing retirement age could be considered for reappointment, subject to eligibility and other applicable conditions.
The proposal is intended to help retain experienced doctors and strengthen medical services, particularly in government hospitals where shortages of specialists and other medical professionals can affect patient care.
Under the proposed arrangement, doctors who meet the required conditions would be able to continue serving after retirement through reappointment rather than automatically remaining in service.
The government is expected to work out the detailed framework, including eligibility requirements and the process through which doctors can be considered for continued service.
Retaining experienced medical professionals can be particularly useful in departments requiring specialised skills and long clinical experience. Senior doctors also play an important role in mentoring younger medical staff and supporting the functioning of government hospitals.
The move comes as states continue to look for ways to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and ensure adequate availability of doctors.
Uttar Pradesh has a large government healthcare network covering medical colleges, district hospitals and healthcare facilities at different levels. Ensuring sufficient numbers of doctors remains important for maintaining services across this network.
The proposed reappointment system could help bridge staffing gaps while allowing the government to retain experienced professionals.
